From: INST Thiede To: All Barque Eagle Cadets
Subj: Community Project 2007
The objectives of the Sea Cadet program are to introduce youth to Naval life, and to develop in them a sense of pride, patriotism, courage, confidence, and self-reliance.
The Barque Eagle Division of the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps strives to continually offer its Cadets opportunities and adventures only imagined by most, such as working aboard and sailing the USGC Barque Eagle, America's Tall Ship. We have recently added drills at the USCG New London Station, and other such activities are in the works.
One area we are going to enhance is our participation in community events beyond the parades and occassional Color Guard duties. These are not only great opportunities for recruitement, but community service teaches Cadets to look beyond themselves and give to those less fortunate.
All Cadets of Barque Eagle Division are required to come up with an idea on how our Division , or accompanied by other Sea Cadet Divisions, can participate in a community event.
The Cadets will then investigate how to implement their idea and draw up an event outline. If Cadets must contact the group or individual to discuss their event idea, they must stress that their project is only in a development stage and should make no promises.
Cadets may choose to work in groups on one project, but all Cadets must particpate equally in the process.
Parents of the Cadets are welcome to advise and assist, but they should leave the bulk of the project to the Cadets. Cadets shall wear Dress Whites if they must discuss their ideas with groups or individuals.
Examples might be:
- Organizing a clothing drive
- Food drives
- Veterans Hospital event
- Area clean-ups
- Senior citizens activity
Cadets should come to the September meeting prepared to discuss their ideas. We will then vote upon which Community Service project(s) should be implemented. If there are any questions about this initiative, please contact me. Enjoy the summer!
Fair Winds and Following Seas!
